UNT's internal audit professionals play many roles: auditor, consultant, advisor, facilitator, listener, teacher, and administrator. In these roles, all of our activities are directed toward helping you, our client, achieve your goals. Our focus is on the future. Although we look at how you have done things in the past and how you are doing things today, we use this information to help you make improvements so that you can manage even more effectively.
We understand that you may have concerns about working with us. The word "auditor" sometimes conjures up unwarranted fears in people's minds. Our experience shows, however, that most clients who were initially fearful about their operations being audited have been surprised to find that we welcome client participation in the audit process and that we are much more interested in helping a department operate well in the future than we are ferreting out past mistakes.
The audit process is most effective when you, as our client, are actively involved in helping us understand the results you are endeavoring to accomplish.
The Internal Audit Department functions in accordance with the Texas Internal Auditing Act. We recognize the Institute of Internal Auditors as our professional and authoritative source. As such, Internal Audit reports directly to the UNT Board of Regents with access to the Chancellor of the University.
Members of the State Auditors Office annually review internal audit activity. In addition, every three years, a team of auditors from outside the University performs a quality assurance review, a peer review, as required by law.
Donald Holdegraver, CIA, CFE
System Chief Internal Auditor
Don Holdegraver has a BS in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and over 32 years experience in facilitating change is organizations, including 27 years in higher education and healthcare. Don is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Inspector General (CIG), and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Prior to joining UNT in 2006, Don led internal audit functions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of South Florida, Saint Louis University and Health Sciences Center, St Francis Regional Medical Center (KS), and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. He also held positions in financial services internal auditing and in public accounting. In his off time, Don enjoys digital and film photography, mountain biking, and attending NASCAR races.
